UvA students in international humanitarian law and Syrian lawyers of the Syria Legal Network-NL cooperate in a research group on ‘Syrian war crimes and options for prosecution’. The project is supervised by the War Reparations Centre and the Law Clinic.
Since 2012 the Syrian government and opposition groups have agreed on several ‘evacuation deals’ that allow civilians and fighters to leave besieged areas. While the Syrian government regards the deals as reconciliation agreements, others view them as compulsory displacement aiming at reshaping the demographic structure of the country. This research is concerned about the contents of the agreements, their legality under international and national law, and the arrangements for restitution or compensation of property. The research report will be discussed during a round table at the end of June 2017. Information: dr Frederiek de Vlaming, firstname.lastname@example.org.
